This is a wonderful insight that I find very useful.
At one level, it seems to be about traveling, and how to get to your destination.
At another level, it seems to be about how we see ourselves, and how we see our purpose in life. Yet at a more fundamental level, it's about thoughts and our interest in thoughts, and our interest in having a destination out there in the future.
We can easily see, that if we do not have a direction in our life, we won't get anywhere. <smile> And yet, if one watches TV all day, becoming programmed by the advertisers, you'll begin to move towards what you like, and away from what you don't. It happens automatically because everything here in our experience is always changing, and the ideas we have about ourself too are always changing. Our bodies, the weather, politics, our work environment, our eye sight, etc. Our interests seem to move us in a direction, by the simple act of focusing on them. Focusing on our fears will also seem to move us in a direction, but it will feel quite differently.
"What am I interested in" then can be used as a compass in my life. When my heart gets really excited about "what I am focused on" then there is an inner push to "move" in that direction -i.e I spend even more energy focusing on what I am interested in.
If we step back and look at "what we are interested in" we can see then, that we will end up in that direction, unless we change direction.
Now if we look at this in a broader way, everyone's movement is similar. We move through life in stages:
- a child dependant on their mother for everything (mother is the God figure; the Mother Goddess)
- a teenager becomes more and more independent moving towards independence
- a teenager becomes an adult assuming responsibility for it's actions
- an adult moves towards dependence on others, and gives up this movement altogether
Indian mythology describes this movement as "rebirth" --the endless cycle of human experience. The fear of death itself is fundamental to the last three stages of this human experience, and from this level we can see that the human experience is a movement away from this fear. If you are interested to look at this deeper, I recommend Ernest Brecker's The Denial of Death
ACIM (A Course in Miracles) says that there are only two emotions: Fear or Love. In effect, there are two energies that seem opposed. Fear isolates you from what you fear, as you run away from whatever it is you fear. You begin to feel small, constricted, tense, vulnerable. Love on the other hand makes you feel expanded, open, grateful, etc. Go and hug a stranger at your church, and see the effect it will have on you.
It also says "You but choose whether to go toward Heaven or away to nowhere. There is nothing else to choose."

So start watching to see the direction you are going. It may surprise you. <smile>
